Since 1995, the Softwood Sawmill Profile has provided stakeholders in the North American wood products sector with the most comprehensive assessment of lumber capacity available.
Now for the first time, Forest Economic Advisors has taken over the production of the Profile from the U.S. Forest Products lab. Henry Spelter continues in his role as the lead analyst on the report and has been joined by three of his FEA colleagues.
Purchasers of the Profile 2011 will receive a copy of the report along with an extensive set of Excel tables. For the first time ever, the Profile will be available in GIS shape files that show mill capacities in all of the relevant US states and Canadian provinces.
The Profile 2011 report comes at a time of considerable fluidity in sawmilling. Many mills have been closed for good and an unusually large additional block is not operating but still intact. This shadow capacity represents a swing factor that will affect the course of lumber markets. The report outlines the extent of the active and shadow capacities across North America. It also delves into the changes in employment in sawmilling and logging and examines labor trends in the current extended downturn.
Migration of skilled labor from the sawmilling and logging sectors to other industries creates potential bottlenecks in any future revival of demand. A major part of the report analyzes the prospects for U.S. housing at a time of likely subnormal economic growth. Those and a wide ranging examination of the economics of sawmilling and its role in the wider economy provide a wealth of information on the current state of the softwood lumber industry.
