Barriers to Off-site Construction and Potential Solutions

The lack of labor in the trades and the horrible track record of productivity in housing construction makes a clear case for greater use of off-site construction. However, significant barriers are limiting the growth of off-site construction in the US.  Volatile demand in residential construction markets, consumer’s preference for site-build homes, and restrictive zoning and financing regulations are all impediments slowing the development.  The construction industry and policy are beginning to address these issues, but more innovation is needed for off-site construction to become a viable solution.
